This
class features a
modified yoga and qigong
practice. The exercises
will focus on combining
postures and flowing
gestures with breathing
techniques to improve
balance, strength and
flexibility, addressing
different levels of
physical ability and
motivation.
Incorporating deep
relaxation, healing
visualization, and
meditation, the guiding
principal of this
program will be to adapt
postures for those with
limited physical range
of motion while
retaining the essential
principles of yoga and
qigong. We will work
with range-of-motion,
muscle strengthening,
and endurance
exercises
- the three major forms
of exercise typically
prescribed for people
with arthritis. Qigong
(pronounced chee-kung)
movement is incorporated
with the yoga postures,
to create a flowing,
relaxing program. Qigong
is an ancient Chinese
health care system that
integrates physical
postures, breathing
techniques and focused
intention. It is a
system practiced for
health maintenance,
healing and increasing
vitality, a way of
cultivating energy. The
movements are very
gentle and slow, and
therefore are ideal for
people who have
arthritis. Tai chi is a
style of qigong.
A recent
University of Arizona
opinion paper on
mind-body alternatives,
such as tai-chi, yoga
and meditation, for
rheumatic diseases
concluded that stress
and pain are closely
related, and therapies
that focus on
psychological as well as
physical function could
be beneficial (when used
along with conventional
medications).
